At Rebecca Dolinsky's Open Studios, I'm presenting my publication in progress, "Portraits." Developed in conversation with the artist, this book project, designed by Sophie Glasser, explores the possibilities of portraiture in paint and in words.

My research and essay on Deborah Hanson-Murphy (1931-2018) accompanies the late artist's first major solo exhibition. Selections from her painting series, Variations (1975-2011) are currently on view at Balice Hertling.

Akademie Der Kunste Der Welte: Conference "Forms of Togetherness (and Separation)"

Part of the Programme Pluriversale at the Akademie der Kunste der Welt, Cologne, I will speak on artist Mounir Fatmi's video Horizontal Fall, 2000 for curator Elena Sorokina's narrated exhibition, “Forms of Togetherness (and Separation),” next Wednesday, April 22nd, together with Florence Lazar (presented by Sandra Cattini), Katia Kameli, and Franck Leibovici.  

“What are the limits of tolerance? As recent tragic events in France and elsewhere rekindle intense public debates on integration, radicalism, religion, secularity, and freedom of expression, it becomes clear that these issues are relevant far beyond France – wherever global migrations face integration into 'national communities.' Conceived as a 'narrated exhibition,' Forms of Togetherness (and Separation) features artists who explore the ethnic, linguistic or cultural communities and minorities coexisting in European societies today. It takes the form of a onenight live event in which each artist presents or performs a work. Documentary or fictional, these artists’ investigations are akin to Jacques Rancière’s notion of 'community of sense': 'a frame of visibility and intelligibility that puts things or practices together under the same meaning, which shapes thereby a certain sense of community.'”

The Sacred & Contemporary Art

This morning, I will give a talk for the Sunday Forum at the American Cathedral in Paris on the position of religion and the sacred in Contemporary Art. My talk closely considers Brian O'Doherty's Inside the White Cube: The Ideology of the Gallery Space, James Elkins's On The Strange Place of Religion in Contemporaray Art, Thierry de Duve's examination of Edouard Manet's The Dead Christ with Angels in his exhibition catalogue Look, 100 Years of Contemporary Art, and Hans Belting's Likeness and Presence, as well as the Centre Pompidou's 2008 exhibition, "Traces du Sacré." We will also look at modern and contemporary works that blur the Western post-Reformation separation between art and religion in projects including, among others, Matisse's Chapel at Vence; the Rothko Chapel, Houston; Willem de Kooning's triptych altarpiece, "Hallelujah," made for Saint Peter's Church, New York City; John Armleder's "Pour Paintings" for the Eglise Saint Eustache, Paris; Christopher Wool's stained glass windows for the Prieure La Charité, Loire; and Sophie Calle's upcoming exhibition "Rachel, Monique" at The Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest in New York.

The Landscape of FIAC

At the 40th edition of FIAC, I guided clients of Paris-based design advisors arte-case through the landscape of the leading international fair for contemporary art.
